With musical interests ranging from folk music to algorithmic electronic music, Matīss Vikmanis is a composer who explores different genres and musical languages as well as music technology possibilities. Installations and live multimedia performances alongside academic choral and chamber music give a representation of the varied creative nature of the composer.
With a bachelor's degree in electronic music composition from the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, Matīss Vikmanis pursues projects encompassing audio programming and game design, using tools such as Max MSP and Unreal Engine, as well as more traditional composition. His work sets out to explore the connection and interactivity of art by inviting the listener to participate in the music and spectacle, and blends real and perceived spaces.
A deep cultural heritage of the Baltic peoples, as well as a contemporary understanding of music technology and language, creates a unique blend of sounds that opens the doors to the ancient past with a present-day key. Best represented in the latest work of the composer, the choral piece "Tumsā gāju", as well as the upcoming video game by the same name in English: "Darkness I Walked".
